Primary Education

Education is free in theory up to age 15 in Tanzania, although unfortunately poorer parents are unable to afford uniforms, school materials and examination fees, and so their children continue to be deprived. The primary period lasts for 7 years, where after all children must pass the same examination for a primary school certificate.

Middle Education

Four years of junior secondary schooling follow. Nominal annual tuition fees are levied, as are a wide variety of other charges too, ranging from watchman fees through to a furniture levy. The medium of education is English, although Swahili language classes are also followed. There are examinations at the end of forms 2 and 4.

Secondary Education

Secondary education in Tanzania follows the Cambridge model of ordinary and advanced levels, both of which require 2 years of study followed by an examination. The advanced level is available only at certain boarding schools, which effectively often means the end of the road for many a poor child because of cost.

Vocational Education

A vocational education and training act is in place that finds expression through the vocational education and training authority. The latter sets standards, and issues educational and training guides, for implementation through a network of state and private colleges. Other roles include entrepreneurship development, gender issues in the workplace, and the war against child labor.

Tertiary Education

Tertiary education takes a minimum of 3 years, at a wide variety of institutions under control of the ministry of higher education.  Of these the oldest is the University of Dar es Salaam, which was established in 1970 following the dissolution of the University of East Africa into 3 national institutions.

There are 5 campuses in the city and 10 faculties. These include mechanical & chemical engineering, electrical & computer systems engineering, civil engineering & the built environment, humanities & social sciences, and education.

  • Medically trained personnel (Registered Medical Doctor, nurse).
  •  A degree in Social Work, Public Health, Social Sciences, or similar field from a recognized academic institution will be an added advantage.
  • Candidates should have at least three years of clinical experience. 
  • Experience in Project ECHO and HIV prevention and treatment initiatives is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrates experience in coordinating and facilitating training and workshops.
  •  Must be computer literate with knowledge and skills in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint. Knowledge of any statistical data package will be an added advantage.

Organizational Settings

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), leads international efforts to alleviate hunger, eliminate poverty and achieve food and nutrition security for all. At present, FAO is supporting a number of interventions related to Agriculture (crop, Livestock, Fisheries, Forestry development and Food Security And Nutrition. FAO is seeking for suitably qualified and experienced consultants to support on assessment of Agriculture Statistics Strategic plan (ASSP I 2014-2019) and formulation of ASSP II under the FAO Programme in Tanzania and according to the Country Programming Framework.

Reporting Lines

The National Consultant will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, and the direct supervision and guidance of the Assistant FAO Representative – Programme and technical supervision of the FAO agriculture statistics Officers from country Office and the FAO Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa as well as technical backstopping from the Regional Office for Africa (RAF) and Headquarters.

Technical Focus

Under the responsibility/supervision of the National Project Coordinator (NPC) and in close collaboration with the Senior national Consultant and other national consultants, the consultant’s principal task will be to support the government of Tanzania in assessing the performance of the ASSP I for the crops sub-sector and contributing to the design of a new Strategic Plan for Agricultural statistics (ASSP 2) for the crops sub-sector.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Guide the process of assessment of the crops sub-sector using the methodology agreed in the roadmap, lead the main meetings and reviews as needed, prepare the main findings and recommendations in the assessment report at sub-sectoral level, communicate it to the Senior National Consultant and NPC;
  • Support the NPC and Senior National Consultant in organizing a workshop for presenting the main assessment findings, recommendations and next steps planned for the preparation of ASSP II; and
  • In close coordination with the NPC and the Senior National Consultant, contribute to the finalization of the ASSP 1 assessment document if needed;
  • Guide the process of designing of ASSP II in the crops sub-sector using the methodology agreed in the roadmap, lead the main meetings and reviews as needed, prepare the proposal (narrative and budget for the sub-sector), communicate it to the NPC and Senior National Consultant;
  • Review and comment the first draft of overall ASSP II prepared by the Senior National Consultant
  • Support the preparation of a final draft of the overall ASSP 2 action plan;
  • Support the preparation of material and contribute to the agenda and discussions of the national validation workshop
  • Support the finalisation of the ASSP II document in close coordination with the Senior National consultant and the NPC
  • Undertake other duties as might be assigned by the FAO Representative


Minimum Requirements

  • Have a Masters-level university degree in Statistics, Economics, Agronomy, Agriculture or related field;
  • Candidates should be Tanzanian;
  • Have at least 5 years of professional experience in organizing national statistics systems, and sound knowledge of agricultural statistics, preferably in Tanzania.

About the Role

The Farmer Engagement Coordinator will form part of the Connected Farmer Plus (CF+) team, supporting the implementation of the CF+ business model and value propositions in Tanzania. The Farmer Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for optimising the uptake of CF+ among smallholder farmers and championing their interests on CF+ via Village-Based Agents (VBAs). The Farmer Engagement Coordinator will train and support VBAs on different aspects of CF+ (business model, value proposition and CF+ technology platforms), monitor VBA performance and advise on best practices in managing the VBA relationship, e.g. incentives, how to create sustainability in the VBA model. Ultimately the Farmer Engagement Coordinator should ensure a smooth customer journey for farmers; making sure the farmers understand the value propositions, and the process of unlocking the value propositions – acting as the farmer champion within the CF+ team. The Farmer Engagement Coordinator will report to the CF+ Programme Manager.

  • 3+ years’ experience in implementing field projects especially in agriculture, supporting smallholder farmers in technology adoption.
  • 3+ years’ experience in building and managing relationships across diverse stakeholder contexts
  • 3+ years’ experience in project management in diverse stakeholder and implementation environments 
  • Good technical and product-market fit understanding in order to link stakeholder value propositions to practical platform functionalities
  • Strong operational execution skills
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills 
  • Good primary and secondary research skills (quantitative and qualitative)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel 
  • Strong business acumen


  • National Diploma or a Bachelor’s Degree in (Business Administration, Agriculture, Social Studies or any other relevant Degree) 
  • Experience in the ICT4Ag, ICT4D, telecommunication, digital, enterprise software or ICT industry
  • Experience in behavioral focused initiatives in underserved communities
